The underlying science of high-pressure lighting

The high-pressure sodium lamp from the PowerPlant uses sodium to produce light. Compared to low pressure lamps, high pressure lamps have more components and include additional materials like mercury. The lamp emits a clear light that gives items it illuminates vibrant colour.

Due to its resilience to the high pressure and the fact that it is a stable noble gas, xenon is used in the arc tube of a high-pressure sodium lamp. This is employed as a light starter since it is incredibly inert and does not interfere with the chemical processes taking place inside the functioning lamp.
